I've Got The Bug!

Hello friends! Taran is sleeping in this morning so I'm taking this quiet time to do my post. I didn't mean to be long for so long. Taran's been sick. We had a fun little snow storm and very frigid temps! 3rd this winter. We have snow up to our eyeballs. Kellon had 3 snow days from school. He finally went back to school yesterday to a full school week in a very long time, it seems. Kellon started swimming lessons last night...another challenge for us.

As I mentioned in my Blog TITLE...I got the bug. The organizing bug, that is! I don't know if it's the new year or the NEW "want to be" SIMPLIFY MY LIFE me? But I've been feeling really good lately. So I tackled the dreaded craft room supplies. I'm not a very good organizer...well I should say in the past. When I see chaos, then I get so overwhelmed and just give up! Well I'm happy to say the craft room is CLEAN! Besides the many projects waiting on me. But at least my supplies are in order and my work benches are clear! My goal is to PUT THINGS AWAY WHEN I'M DONE WITH THEM!!! Sounds simple, huh? But when I'm looking after 2 little boys, it's easy to drop what I'm doing and let things BE and then the piles easy accumulate very fast!

I went head first into my office closet and everything that has overflowed on the floor. PAPERS! Another nightmare. It took me 2 days but everything is filed! Things have been thrown away, shredded, has a new home. I totally feel refreshed and ready to keep this up!

Next up are the decorations I have packed up. Things need to be purged and reorganized into a better system. I have a big thing about sentimental value to things I don't really care for. I hang on to them and they stay in a box. What's the point of having them if they are hiding in boxes? So this will be a hard process for me. I just need to learn to LET GO of a few things and let someone else enjoy them more than I will/would. The STUFF feels like it's suffocating me and REALLY I need to SIMPLIFY. :)

Any new year's resolutions you've been working on? I'm treating this as a NEW START instead of a resolution because really I don't stick with them. LOL I told hubby I was going to be obsessed with organizing as much as I am with finances/budgeting. He's going with the flow and said he would work with me on this. Now if I would only get this excited about working out? :)

Along with purging, I've been tweaking. I got the wall decor in the living/dining room rearranged. That's fun for a different "look"! Remember my Christmas wreath/frame I got from Leslie? Well I took the Christmas sign off and then flipped the wreath and the frame (to accommodate the current nail holes). I think it looks great! And now I can enjoy it a little longer.

Here's a few other things that have been moved.

Remember my project with drop cloths that I mentioned in my last post?

I love our house! It's spacious. I love the layout. I love our edge of town lot. But like any house that you didn't design yourself, there are a few things that I would like to change or are challenges...Like my kitchen. I love it since we did a makeover on it but I wish it was a little bigger. Our big bathroom needs major updating. And another challenge is this HUGE window in our living room!! This baby is floor to ceiling! 18 feet wide and over 6 feet tall!

We bought this house from the grandson of the original owners. His grandparents wanted a BIG window to sit their 2 chairs in front of and watch the action, I guess. I would of personally put this HUGE window to the back of the house for the view. The grandparents didn't use curtains we heard. The old homeowners used vertical blinds. YUK. They were torn down as soon as we moved in. We replaced the 1960's woodwork with primitive looking 1x4's with red paint. YUM! Another dilemma with this wall/window is the 2 heating/AC vents at the base of the wall. So full length curtains couldn't be put there or you'll block the vents. The old homeowners cut a section of the blinds out where the vents were. LOL

So for 3 years, I've been playing around with treatments on this darn window. Nothing has worked on a BUDGET. Sure it would be easy to put treatments on this baby with the CUSTOM PRICE! I couldn't imagine what the price of that would be???!! I know outrageous! Even buying simple panels to go all way across would cost a lot! Then I would have to get them all shortened because of the vents.

Here's a pic of the dilemma. I couldn't even get all the window in my shot! Oh and Kellon says hi. :)

Last year I saw a blog that shared an idea for using drop cloths for curtains! They are already hemmed and ready for hanging! Not painting. :) She used them "vertical" on her tall ceilings/window. It hit me with the idea to use them "horizontal" on my 18 feet of windows. So with 2 drop cloths at about $10 a piece at Home Depot, FINALLY I found the cure to our window curse! I had to buy 2 rods and some curtain clips also. But I found those also at a good price at Target.

A closer look at my "curtains". The material is really nice and thick! The weave reminds me of a good quality muslin.

I thought I would go one one more step with the curtains and dress them up a bit. I had some red homespun material already, so it was ripped to length and clipped to the top. It adds just the right primitive punch to our room.

I was also happy not to cover up the woodwork we worked so hard on. As you can see we had to stop at the bottom of the window to work around the vents. The drop cloths come in different sizes, so maybe you can find a window to "treat" on a budget! :)

I can't tell you how unbelievable the privacy feels for us! We felt like we were in a fish bowl and everyone was looking in when out for walks and driving by. SO Finally some privacy! Because we spend a lot of time in this room.

**Note: I did feel bad taking a picture of our neighbor's car, but I just had to show you what I had to look at all day out this huge window!!** Isn't that the ugliest thing?! This is the house right across the street from us that a landlord KING of our town bought. The renters in our town can be quite "characters". A 30 something year old guy drives this thing...sorry to offend anyone that is reading this and loves flames on sides of your car. :) Even my 6 year old thinks this is funny!

Now on to my BLUE makeover! I work at an assisted living facility. In December they had a silent auction on items that deceased/moved away residents left behind. The proceeds go to buying presents for needy families at Christmas. The auction brought about $500! So not bad for left over junk/items! There was a lot of outdated things but one thing did catch my eye! A big cabinet, that needed a makeover! I won it for $35! I was so excited and probably could of got it for less but it was a silent auction, so I wanted to make sure I won. There was only 2 other bids. Plus the $ went to a good cause.
So like a bad girl, I forgot to take a BEFORE picture! I can't believe it! I was just too excited to start on it that I forgot! I did take a quick picture of the inside shelf. As you can tell, it's just generic looking. It looked like it was from the 1980's.

When I got it home, I saw it was actually from 1975 and it was homemade. A little homemade plaque was put on the back by it's maker. :) Maybe the resident's husband?

That made it even more special and was happy to bring it back to life! I had visions of BLUE since seeing Rondell's cabinet last year. I'm not a blue person but I just kept thinking about her cabinet. :) So I took the leap and first painted it black, then I used left over blue paint for Kellon's room color. Then applied stain and spray sealer. I LOVE IT!!

The floor. Ignore it. Please :) I intend to paint the floor this winter. I went ahead and painted the craft side of the "door wall" red also!

I wanted different storage for my craft room...so this inspired me to CLEAN UP in there! I found baskets and paper mache boxes (need painted) around the house for storage. There's plenty of room for the boys' art supplies also. So much better than the metal storage shelf I was using!

So that's everything that's been keeping me busy in a nut shell. :) I have another cabinet that needs a makover. This one is very old so it will take a little longer. Sales tax papers are waiting for me...YUK! And I need to finish staining the red "wall door". Plus Taran and Kellon time. Busy, Busy...but finally feeling very productive!
Thanks for stopping by. Have a Wonderful Day!

Happy New Year!

I know I'm a few days late but Happy New Year! We didn't do anything to really celebrate...I fell asleep on the couch by 10:00 pm. But I did manage to scrape myself off the couch by midnight and get into bed, so I was awake to welcome the New Year and then went right back sleep. LOL Then I worked a 3 day weekend so I'm finally getting back into the groove of daylight hours and enjoying my kids. I'm a much better mommy when I get some sleep!

I don't know about you, but I was happy to say good-bye to 2009! It was a challenging year in so many ways and I look so forward to 2010! I feel like I'm in/at a better place TODAY and I am just so blessed beyond words. I just have to remind myself sometimes. :)

2009 did have some good times though.

*I still get to stay home full time during the week with the boys.
* Kellon went to Kindergarten!
* I get to spend one on one time with Taran while brother's away at school. I enjoy watching him grow and blossom.
*I started working again last year, even with hesitation, I surprised myself on how I missed being a nurse and a regular paycheck. :)
*We saved LOTS of $$$$! With the help of budgeting with my hubby, couponing with sales, frugal lifestyle, garage sales and Financial Peace University (we heart Dave Ramsey). We were able to pay a big chunk of our mortgage off and have a nice emergency fund.
* Dave and I have jobs!
* We have our health!
* We have a roof over our head, clothes to wear, food to eat.
* We have friends and family that we care about so much...including my online buds. :)

I am so very Thankful.

My hubby went to a funeral today...Her name was Paula, she died of an aneurysm at the age of 37 on New Year's Eve. I don't know too much since Dave's not home yet but assume it was sudden. She has 2 children under the age of 10. She was a music teacher. 2 of Dave's best friends are brothers and this was their sister. Dave knows this family real well so this hit him pretty close to home. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers. My heart aches for her parents, siblings, husband, children and students. Life is just too short, you just never know what tomorrow may bring. Unfortunately it takes some of us this kind of news to remember to Enjoy each and every moment.
********************************
On a much lighter note, I wanted to share my Christmas gifts. My side of the family picks names for gifts. I really like this way so we don't have to stress over gifts for EVERYONE. We picked names last year so we had a year notice to find things at good sales or whatever. We have a $15-$20 budget. Lucky me, my mom got me!!
She gave this big heavy box and when I opened it, it was full of fun antique finds! I got 2 crocks and 2 crock bowls!

This bowl is really BIG!

This pitcher. It's Roseville. :) She got these all for $1 each at auctions and garage sales. Can't beat that price!

Well it's time for the boys' baths, so better run. Next time I will share my Easy project I did with drop cloths...and my blue makekover. :)

Until next time...Prim Blessings, Kindra

A White Out Christmas!

Hello! I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends! As always the Holidays, moments, memories...just fly by. Now it it back to the work week and with lots of snow on the ground! The sun is shining today and no wind...much different than the weather we had these past few days! Nebraska had quite the blizzard for Christmas! Not what I had in mind for a Christmas present, but we were just thankful that we had a warm house to stay in during all of this! This is our deck today! Drifts, drifts and more drifts EVERYWHERE! We got home from being at my parent's this weekend and had a lot of snow to remove to get in and out of our garage. :( Dave scooped all afternoon yesterday, I'm sure not his #1 choice of activity to do on his day off. He didn't even get to the sidewalk yet. There is just so much and not much room for it to be piled as we still have lots of snow left from our snow storm a couple weeks ago. Is it okay for me to wish for spring already?! LOL

On Christmas Eve, the boys and I stayed home. We had a yummy supper and then we headed out in the blizzard to church for Kellon's program. Santa came while we were in church! So we enjoyed his presents and more presents from mommy and daddy! I even got a present! Dave snuck in a present at the last minute under the tree...I got myself an electric blanket! Woo Hoo! It is wonderful! It's so darn cold in our bed when we first get in and boy does that electric blanket feel good! Reminds me of my old water bed days in high school!

On Christmas Day, we ventured out to my parent's house. We went back and forth if we should attempt to go in the blizzard or not. The roads were full of drifts, but we made it safe and sound!

On Saturday we were going to head back home, but we were finding out that the highways were much worse and some were even closing. So we stayed at my parent's til' Sunday. This Christmas was sure out of the ordinary but we sure enjoyed ourselves!
I took some pics of my parent's home to share with you. I always admire my mom's decorating!

I made this stitchery *free hand* for a craft fair 3 years ago. My mom wanted it before the sale started it so that was her Birthday present. :)

I hope you enjoyed the tour! I better go and play with the boys. Have a wonderful day!

Another Sweet Package!

Hello there! The sun is shining here in SE Nebraska and the snow it melting just a little...just in time for our next snow storm? coming on Wednesday/Thursday. Yuk! But I'm hoping it won't be too bad...we need to make it to grandma and grandpa's house on Friday!

The boys are eager for Christmas magic this week! So are mom and dad. :) WE are truly blessed with our sweet, silly boys!

Here are the gingerbread that Colleen made for me! They smell so gooood!

The boys are enjoying their "own" Christmas trees in their rooms! They're decorated with their own ornaments. Just makes them a little more special!

Here's Taran's 1st baby ornament.

I used buckets for bases. Kellon seems unsure about my "old" things sometimes. I don't think he liked the bucket. :)

Evelyn from Lee Hill Primitives had a Christmas Giveaway and I was the lucky winner! I received this super cute snowman, that she made! Love him!

She also added in this VERY cute pillow, that she made! The back is red and white ticking. It looks great nestled in a basket of greens next to a tin Colleen also got me. I just love my prim friends! Thank you so much!

Here's a sneak peak at my current makeover! Still have a little bit to go but I'm going out of my comfort zone and painting a big piece blue...so stay tuned!

Well I shall go and tend to my sidekick. He makes me smile and laugh all the time. And I'm a sucker for those big blue eyes. Have a blessed day.

Love from My Dear Friend

The clock is ticking...one more week and Christmas will be here! Are you ready? I got the teacher gift yet, but the rest of the presents are wrapped and under the tree. Not very many this year, but that is certainly alright with me! I've been asking Kellon what he wants for a couple months and he really can't think of anything. So that makes me happy he's fulfilled with what he has. But I know he will be excited for presents when the time comes! So far, they have been untouched. Taran is quite curious, so I hope he leaves them alone, else they will have to be put away until Christmas. :)
It was like Christmas in my house this week! A package from my sweet, sweet, Maine friend, Colleen, was in my mailbox! I've "known" Colleen for about 2 years, she was my first blog friend and we sure hit it off from the start. She spoils me with her goodies during the Holidays and "just because" times. We always say, "Oh, I wish Maine and Nebraska were a little bit closer!" The time will come when we get to meet someday and I can't wait for that day! You wanna see what I got?! Colleen certainly spoiled me and my boys, that's for sure!
Colleen always makes me such wonderful stitcheries. I can just picture her sitting in her chair with her feet up, sewing away on gifts. Her handmades are such treasures to me! I love seeing them sprinkled all over my house!

She made me some dough bowl fillers!

Even some stockings for my sweet boys.

I realized I forgot to take a picture of the gingerbread fillers in the kitchen...I'll share next time.
She made me this cool Santa plaque! Looks great on my red shelf!

That's not all...look at all this! Brownie mix, puppy chow in a cute Santa tin (forgot to take a picture), Santa napkins, Gingerbread mix, candles made in Maine...she even thought of my boys and got them some candy, coloring books, crayons and markers! I told you she spoiled us!

Thank you again, Colleen, for your wonderful friendship. We might be miles and miles apart, but our hearts are next door neighbors. ((Hugs))
****************************************
Well I have been working on a makeover this past week. It's been mighty cold, even in our heated garage...so I thought I would do a project in my craft room. First I had to clean my craft room in order to move. LOL Then I got to work on this beauty.

What?! You don't like the color? Looking past the color, I got this solid piece at an auction last summer for $1! No one wanted it, so I raised my hand for $1. I didn't know what I was going to do with it. My hubby wonders about my treasures I bring home, but he knows I'm smart with prices and has faith on what I can do with them...so he trust my judgement on such ugly items. LOL
This piece had good bones, but needed a little work. Someone put it together with the wood they had on hand, you could tell. So with a little trim here and there...and the yucky plywood was pulled off the back and replaced with leftover beadboard from our kitchen renovation, it was ready for some paint!
I first painted it red and topcoat with black. I started to sand just an edge and that bright yellow was showing through. So I stopped and chose not to sand it. I purposely painted the black uneven to let some of the red peek though so it was okay with no sanding. I then stained it and tada! A great piece for our mudroom area! (don't mind the unfinished floor...still unfinished) I got the baskets at Michael's for 1/2 off. Now each family member has a spot to throw their gloves, hats, toys, mail, misc...when we walk in the door!

Here's a peak of the red/black combo and beadboard.

Gotta love thrifty makeovers! I got more projects waiting for me in the craft room to makeover! Now with a clean room, I feel inspired to get it messy again! LOL

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! See you next week!

Well The Weather Outside WAS Frightful!

What a week! We literally have been cooped up...our snow storm gave Kellon 3 days off from school. He was excited at first but was ready to go back yesterday, on his birthday. Bummer. So plans were rearranged and instead of celebrating at school, we took him to an "eatery" here in town. A couple of his friends came over for a little birthday party and they had a great time! I guess it's official I have a 6 year old...where does the time go?!

We got LOTS OF SNOW! Plus some drifts. Dave had to clear the sidewalks and driveway 3 times. The deck is waiting for it's turn.

There was even a car accident just east of our tree line on Tuesday night. The road curves by our house and I guess he missed it! That would of been a little scary.

Poor Mr. Taran, didn't feel good all week. He is still recuperating and hopefully his appetite will be back to normal soon. No one else in this house has gotten sick...knock on wood.

As promised, I have a few Christmas pictures of our home. I decorated simple, but inviting for my family and guests. Just 2 more weeks til' Christmas, I can't believe it!

In an ideal world, I would go out and buy some cute olde stockings to hang from staircase...but with budget in mind, I invaded the rag box and got out some of my hubby's holey socks. Added a little paint and tea dyed them. A fun addition to the greenery.

The snowman stitchery was made by my friend, Colleen. She is always so generous with her love and handmades! And the snowman was given to me by my other blog friend, Kim, a couple months ago. Now I can finally display it!

My hubby's childhood sled.

Stitchery block made by my mom.
I love old vintage prints!

My mom made these small benches.

Pillow made by my mom.

The snowballs were made by Colleen!

Candle holder and stitchery made by my mom.

The chimney cupboard was made by my parents.

I added some simple greenery and berries to my ironing board. :)
I saw on old sled at a craft fair that was decorated with greenery, an old looking ribbon that said "Merry Christmas", plus an old skate. It was very cute but not with the $80 price tag!! Ouch! Stay on the lookout at garage sales and auctions! I got this old sled for $5! And to make it even more special, I bought it from the original owner...the back of it says January 1951. :) I then ripped a piece of muslin, stenciled "Winter Thyme" with regular craft paint, then tea dyed it. Nestle it in a little greenery and the look is complete! A lot better than $80!

My mom made the manger cross-stitch for me in 1988. :) The tree was made by Lisa.
Santa stitchery made by Julie.

Towel made by my mom.

Colleen made some fun ornaments for my family last year!

Well I hope you enjoyed my small tour. Another birthday party is planned for tomorrow, a makeover I'm working on, and then I got to go back to work. I hope your weekend is great! Thanks for visiting. I hope to back to blogging/blog visiting on a normal basis soon!
